Freedom Camping, DOC Campsites or Holiday Parks in Greymouth?

There's something pretty appealing about pulling your campervan into a beautiful spot beside the sea and settling in for the night. And if you're travelling around New Zealand on a budget, freedom camping and DOC campsites can be great ways to make your money go further.

That being said, whether you're touring in a fully equipped motorhome or considering sleeping in your van to save on costs, there are a few things worth knowing, especially if you’re travelling over public holidays or summer.

‍

Freedom Camping Near Greymouth

There are places around the Greymouth area where freedom camping is permitted, but that doesn't mean you can just park up anywhere you like.

Grey District Council has rules about where you can stay, how long you can stay and what type of vehicle you need. Some areas are restricted to certified self-contained vehicles, which now need a valid green warrant rather than the old blue sticker. Get it wrong, and you could be looking at a $400 fine. And yes, the council does carry out regular checks. Not quite the budget-friendly night you had in mind!

As of June 2026, vehicles with portable toilets don’t meet self-containment rules, so if you're travelling in a van or converted campervan, you may not be eligible to freedom camp.

DOC Campsites on the West Coast

The Department of Conservation (DOC) manages campsites throughout the West Coast, some of which are in beautiful spots surrounded by native bush. Unlike freedom camping areas, DOC campsites often welcome tents and vehicles that aren't certified self-contained. However, facilities can be basic, so if you're travelling without your own toilet or cooking facilities, research the site before you travel.

The fees to use a DOC campsite vary, and while many are bookable, some still operate on a first-come, first-served basis. It's worth checking before you set off.

The Catch with Unbookable Campsites

One of the biggest drawbacks of free camping and unbookable DOC campsites is that you can't guarantee you’ll get a space. During summer, school holidays and long weekends, sites can fill up early.

We’ve heard you can improve your chances by trying to arrive before 3 pm, and that's all well and good, but what if you've spent the day exploring Punakaiki and don't reach Greymouth until 5 pm? There’s nothing worse than finding yourself driving around looking for another place to stay when you'd rather be sitting down for dinner.

Another issue we’ve heard people come across is that they’ve secured their spot, then taken the campervan off for a day of sightseeing only to find someone has taken their space on their return. It’s a dog-eat-dog world when it comes to budget campgrounds in peak season!

The biggest advantage of a holiday park is you can book it and forget it, safe in the knowledge that there will be a space reserved when you arrive. You can use the park as a base, enjoy all the facilities, and take day trips to explore the West Coast without worrying about where you’ll stay that night.

What Facilities Do Greymouth Campgrounds Offer?

The biggest difference between freedom camping, DOC sites and holiday parks is the level of facilities provided.

Free Greymouth camping sites might have public toilets or rubbish bins, but others are just a stretch of grass. Many of the DOC campsites near Greymouth are “Standard” sites, meaning they have basic toilets, a water supply, and drive-in vehicle access. But always check the specific site you’re considering, particularly if you're planning to stay several nights.

In contrast, holiday parks will generally offer more facilities, including hot showers, communal kitchens, BBQ areas, laundry and a playground for the kids. And after a few days on the road, being able to do a load of laundry and take a hot shower is often money well spent.
